ValuStream improves upon the standard methods of identifying risks by focusing upon design assumptions. When the design capability is lacking, designers will make assumptions to overcome the shortfall. These assumptions are the root source of failures.  ValuStream penetrates to the fundamental root sources of programmatic and technical risks by focusing on the requirements and the capability to fulfill those requirements. ValuStream asks discipline specialists to look for the problematic assumptions.  ValuStream uses a structured approach of identifying discipline specialists to look at a design to identify its hidden explicit and implicit risks.  The result is specific problems statements, with metrics, tied to specific requirements.
Results That Management Can Use
Management has all of the information necessary to determine a course of action for each risk.

Specific problem statements are created.

Risks are prioritized in the standard Likelihood-Consequence form.

The discipline specialists specify the mitigation plans.

When you receive these prioritized risks, you know that both the designers and the discipline specialists agree upon the priorities.

Since the risks are tied to the requirements, metrics can be established to measure the mitigation progress.
